Grace's Emergency Shelter

Grace's Emergency Asylum Shelter

to Move Toward Next Phase

The Vestry of Grace Episcopal Church unanimously decided at its February 20th meeting that the Emergency Asylum Shelter housed at the church will transition to its next phase on March 15th, the end date previously announced by the Village of Oak Park.

Father John, the Asylum Task Force at Grace, and others involved in this ministry will work with the Village and Housing Forward to transition our guests to a new shelter or more permanent housing by that date.

We were first asked to provide shelter on October 31st, 2023, only planning for a few weeks—but that simple plan quickly transformed into a multidimensional effort that lasted for more than four months. Grace not only provided our guests with safety and stability, food and a warm place to sleep, but also connected our guests to medical care and legal assistance as we sought to support our guests in their ongoing journey to safety and a better future. And during those four months, many of our guests have found work, and most of our guests have acquired Temporary Protected Status (TPS) or have had their asylee status legally confirmed.

Thank you to everyone who has taken part in the huge effort of housing, feeding, and caring for our guests. Parishioners and neighbors, all who have given, worked, prayed, and supported our guests in any way—thank you. And for all of us—let us continue to pray for these asylum seekers as we seek to assist them toward the next part of their journey over the next three weeks.

Father John will have more information at worship this Sunday.
