The divider extending across the arch at the north end of the worship space is the rood screen. Rood screens have been part of church architecture since early medieval times. The rood itself is the large cross at the center of the top beam of the divider.
Grace’s rood is the large resurrection cross above the central arch of Grace’s carved oak screen. Below that is a depiction of Christ’s crucifixion. The figures on the screen represent the apostles, plus evangelists Mark and Luke.
Architect John Sutcliffe designed the rood screen, and his original sketches are among Grace's treasures.
