Altar and Reredos

The altar is where the sacrament of Holy Communion is carried out, and the reredos is the decorated wall immediately behind it.

The three carved panels on Grace’s white French sandstone altar depict Christ’s transfiguration, crucifixion, and resurrection.

The figures on the carved oak reredos represent the line of bishops (the apostolic succession) beginning with St. Peter and ending with Bishop Charles P. Anderson who was Bishop of Chicago when Grace was built. He had been rector of Grace from 1891 to 1900.

The figure of Bishop Anderson looks just like him.
